When starting a remodel of its building last year, being green was a major focus for the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce. From upgrading its heating and cooling systems to changing up office supply purchases, here are a few ways we’re working to lead the way in sustainability.
Creating a Culture
The Chamber formed a green team to encourage and communicate best practices for sustainability to our team and our members. That has meant moving to reusable kitchen items and recycled copy paper; decreasing food waste through the use of community food stickers and reusable food containers; and creating messaging around available our recycling and coffee composting programs. In fact, in January, we collected 1,227 pounds of recycling at our office.
Saving Energy
The Chamber roof is host to 10 solar panels and a micro wind turbine. And, we’re conserving energy with Energy Star-rated laptops, flat screens and printers and moving our storage to the cloud. Sustainable commuting is supported through complimentary transit passes, bicycle storage and shower and locker facilities. And soon, our stairwell will be open to guests, and will showcase the uphill trek of a Colorado fourteener, thanks to Kaiser Permanente, to encourage good health while minimizing elevator use.
Being a LEEDer
The Chamber is working toward an Energy Star rating and Silver LEED certification. During our remodel we upgraded our heating, cooling and HVAC system to high-efficiency equipment. LED fixtures light our space and pine beetle kill paneling adorn our walls.
Supporting Colorado’s future
Colorado is on the forefront of renewable energy with education and research institutions setting a high bar for sustainability. We are committed to sustaining resources and economic vitality for future generations.
