In last week’s Virtual Voices, a new series from the Leadership Foundation, we heard from Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Kelly Brough on how businesses are navigating this pandemic, the importance of leaning on your team and how we can all come together to help Colorado.
Virtual Voices aims to keep alums informed and engaged as our community works through this challenging time. Each virtual meeting brings together leaders on the front lines of impacted industries to share their knowledge, perspectives and leadership lessons.

Each Business’ Story is Unique. COVID-19 is affecting us all, and it’s a powerful reminder that each crisis disproportionally affects certain businesses. Our small businesses are being hit particularly hard right now, especially those in the restaurant, hospitality, airline, retail and health care industries. But we also have industries that are experiencing success. The financial, professional services, accounting and law sectors are even hiring. Even though our experiences during this pandemic are unique, we’ll only get through this if we work together.
Lean on Your Team. In a time of uncharted waters, it’s important to rely on others. Bring your team together to navigate solutions during this uncertain time. And, it’s important to acknowledge what you can and can’t control. As a team, work on what you can control, and you’ll figure out how to take the next step.
Adapt, Adapt, Adapt. The Chamber team had to think fast to deliver what’s typically in-person content in virtual formats. For instance, our events team understood what members needed and worked to bring it to them – launching a webinar series almost overnight. Not only did the type of content change, but team roles shifted as well. Being able to adapt to needs was key to keeping the team energized and members engaged.
Awareness of Choices. This crisis has shown us how our choices affect not only your friends and family, but also your community. Take time to slow down and think about how your decisions impact others. It reminds us how we’re all in this together and gives us an opportunity to unite and collaborate to get things done.
Importance of a Job. Nothing is more important to a family than having a good job, and we’ve seen our unemployment numbers skyrocket these past few months. We can work with our businesses on bringing back employees that they had to let go, and we can help people who recently lost jobs by offering resources to find their next job or even start their own businesses. Colorado’s entrepreneurial spirit helped our state get out of the Great Recession and we may see that again during this downturn.
