DENVER, CO—May 29, 2026—The Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce today issued the following statement after Governor Jared Polis vetoed House Bill 26-1005, the “Worker Protection Act,” legislation that would have made significant changes to Colorado’s longstanding Labor Peace Act.
“We are grateful to Governor Polis for his leadership and for standing with Colorado workers and employers by vetoing HB 26-1005,” said Leslie Oliver, Vice President of External Affairs at the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce. “For more than 80 years, Colorado’s Labor Peace Act has struck an important balance—protecting the right to organize while ensuring broad employee consent before deductions can be taken from their paychecks against their will.”
HB 26-1005 would have eliminated the second election currently required before union dues or fees may be automatically deducted from employees’ paychecks without their permission. “This issue is not about whether workers have the right to organize—they do, and we respect that right,” Oliver continued. “It is about preserving each worker’s freedom to choose whether their wages can be reduced without their consent to support a membership organization they chose not to join.”
The Chamber emphasized that maintaining employee choice is especially critical at a time when affordability remains a top concern for Coloradans. “Workers across our state are already feeling the strain of rising costs,” said Oliver. “Ensuring people have a say over their own paychecks—your pay, your choice—matters now more than ever.”
In addition to protecting worker choice, the Chamber noted the Governor’s veto supports Colorado’s broader economic competitiveness. “Employers — and workers — are looking for states with stable, predictable policies—not recurring uncertainty around foundational labor laws,” Oliver said. “Preserving the balance within the Labor Peace Act helps keep Colorado competitive and attractive for businesses looking to create jobs, grow and invest.”
The Denver Metro Chamber reaffirmed its respect for labor’s role in Colorado’s economy. “Labor organizations are vital partners in Colorado’s economy and competitiveness, and we value their role,” Oliver added. “We will continue to support policies that ensure economic empowerment for every Coloradan.”
“We appreciate Governor Polis’ continued focus on balanced policy and his commitment to protecting worker freedom and Colorado’s economic future.”
